Around 1682 cacao started being imported into North America and was esteemed for its affordability to all classes.     Martha Washington drank this “tea” of cacao shell for it’s interesting flavor and health benefits. Caffeine-free; its theobromine content gives a gentle energy boost while relaxing the body and supporting brain, respiration and circulatory function.
    Cacao started being imported to North America around 1682, esteemed for it’s affordability to all classes; an unknown European noted- “drinking cocoa is the most substantial of any food or berate in the world because whoever drinks a cup of this can go through the day without taking anything else”!

    Colonial Bohea Black tea

    Of Boston Tea party fame. Bohea tea (pronounced “Boo-Hee”)was by far the largest tea import in colonial America- this blend originate in China with trade to the British and Dutch East India companies. It was so popular, the word bohea became the slang term for tea.
    More Bohea tea was destroyed in the Boston Tea Party than any other tea. (242 chests with an average weight of a chest being 270 pounds!)
    Bohea is a smoky winey blend of Wuyi Mountain black and Lapsan Souchong teas.

    Believed to have been named after English tea merchant, Philip Hyson; Hyson teas were highly prized by colonial Americans and tax on Hyson was higher than for other teas.
    70 chests of Hyson were destroyed in the Boston Tea party. (A chest held roughly 270 pounds of tea)!
